Program Areas

Area 1: MENTORING

For the past eleven years, we have worked to increase our reach and number of mentors, successfully reaching over 500 boys. Through our mentoring, the boys develop relationships not only with the mentors but also with their peers and near peers who participate in the programs. Our mastery-based mentoring program was developed through practice and the use of “Best Practices in Mentoring” from the Chronicle of Evidence-Based Mentoring and MENTOR. In the last three years, we moved from in-house “Becoming a Gentlemen” curriculum to an advanced curriculum created by the Mendez Foundation, “Too Good for Violence Social-Emotional Learning Curriculum.” The “Too Good” curriculum is an evidence-based, peer-reviewed curriculum with pre- and post-curriculum assessments. For students attending 52% or more of the program, social competence increased by an average of 71%.

Area 2: STEM EDUCATION

For the past eight years, we have developed and implemented STEM programming for DC schools to foster intellectual ability. Our STEM program (nine weeks long, meeting twice per week) was developed with the assistance of the United States Coast Guard and mentors who were members of the National Society of Black Engineers and the National Association of Minority Architects. Each course includes two written assessments plus a final video assessment. Our boys score an average of 74% on their STEM assessments.

Area 3: GENIUS TUTORING

For the past four years, we’ve used tutoring to help boys improve skills in STEM subjects, increasing their intellectual ability. Our tutoring program was developed in house, with the help of educators on our Board of Directors. Working with our IXL tutoring software and their tutors, our boys achieved mastery in 7/10 Common Core skills attempted. IXL provides continuous diagnostic information that we share with each boy and their parents. The work and the diagnostic are calibrated to the District’s Common Core and leveled for each grade.
